TALLAHASSEE, FL– Today, former Florida House Speaker Paul Renner called for Governor DeSantis and leaders of both legislative bodies to move swiftly into a special session to immediately rollback property taxes to 2024 levels.
Property tax revenues have grown over 50% in the last five years and twice as fast as incomes. The array of property tax cut proposals currently being discussed in the state capital will not provide taxpayers the immediate relief they need and all those proposals require a constitutional vote on next November’s ballot. Even if voters approve one or more of those proposals by the necessary 60% vote, the resulting property tax relief would not occur until 2027, at the earliest.
“The affordability crisis is a clear and present danger to the Florida economy, and our residents and small businesses need relief now— not gridlock,” said Paul Renner, candidate for Governor. “Property taxes have become an unsustainable burden for too many. It is a pocketbook issue that is crushing working families, first time homebuyers and retirees. I’m calling for the Renner Rollback on property taxes to the 2024 levels, as a first step while we consider larger reforms.”
Renner is advocating for the special session to initiate the rollback: “Our residents expect leadership, not division. I am calling on elected leaders to come together and take decisive action to make Florida more affordable now. They have the power to do it through legislative action, as occurred before in the 2006-07 legislative session. My Florida First Affordability Plan begins with this immediate property tax rollback that will provide meaningful savings for hardworking taxpayers across the state.
“Floridians are losing faith in conservative leadership due to inaction. We need to stop the back and forth, or promising relief a year or two from now while delivering nothing meaningful and immediate. Our residents deserve a tax rollback before their property taxes go up again in 2026 and this can easily be accomplished within the next two weeks before Christmas. The Renner Rollback will protect homeowners from another tax increase and give them some relief while we explore the long-term goal of further reducing or eliminating property taxes,” Renner added.
